OK, I failed emissions and ended up pulling the head to replace the exhaust valves. At the same time I replaced the valve seals, all gaskets, new head bolts, timing belt, and water pump.
It fired right up, but smoked, which at first went away after driving some.
Now it smokes A LOT and burns oil.
I think it is the valve seals. Since it didn't have this issue before, I doubt it is the rings. I think it is way too much oil for that anyway. Also it runs great ! With noticeably more power than before the rebuild. So the compression seems great now.
So I am planning to pull the head again and redo the seals. Since I apparently screwed it up the first time, can someone please tell me IN DETAIL how to put these in correctly?
I already made a tool and know how to remove the valve train. I used needle nose pliers to remove the original valve seals. Could I have damaged the guides ? Is there any way to tell ?
Help !
If not, I am going to see if I can take it to a machine shop to do the install.
I am planning on doing this next week 8/4/13.

Info- 3 cylinder '89 Head on a '92 bottom end.

Unless you did something drastically wrong, it's not likely the seals. It's probably your oil rings. The guides are probably toast, too.

Even if you omitted the seals, it likely wouldn't burn much oil anyway.
