got my 95 firefly stuck in snow on its maiden voyage, spun the tires, engine cut out and would not start back up. Engine turns, cap and rotor look new, have yet to check the plugs, but the wires are new too, so I hope it's not the timing belt. :(

But anyhow, when I put it in diagnostic mode it gives me the VSS code, and I was wondering if the VSS was completely Fubar, would that prevent it from starting up? sometimes it sounds like it's getting close, but no dice. please help! and I tried a search but the layout was a little confusing

The beauty of these cars is they are 100% free running. There is no chance you have bent valves or damage. Toss a belt on and go!!!

Line up the crank timing mark and pull the distributor cap. Make sure the rotor is lined up with the number one spark plug wire on the cap.

my cam gear has a spoke that says 60a and one thats says 80a and they both seem to have timing marks. also onthe 60 a one which i went with it seems to be halfway inbetween open and close? also i have the 5 bolt crankshaft pulley so i lined up the keyway withthe line, is that wrong?

The easiest way to see if you have your timing at least close is to do what I described. I'm guilty of putting my belt on incorrectly when I thought I did it right. This test will confirm if it's right.
