There seems to be a lack of mk5 sohc turbo threads. So here's mine.

For a long time I've struggled with posting pictures because they were "too big" but I got an app that resizes stuff small. Hopefully it will fix my problem and not hurt quality.

It has 16Xxxx miles. Smokes on start up(stem seals). Has 3.79 trans in it but I'm going to swap a 410 soon. I put a half shafted esteem (45mm) tb on it. A cone filter. Also swapped in San esteem can (slight bit more duration). Those three things really woke it up. Shortly after my muffler fell off so now its loud but no performance gain.

Ive chosen a t28 from a Volvo. Its a little large but I only want it to spool when I really want it too. Plus it has a factory Bov in the compressor housing.

I'm making my own manifold. I'm getting a plate cut by water jet to match my gasket. And I'm using an OEM 2000 ford focus (ram horn'ish') manifold as a donor for pipes and collector.

I'll be running an intercooler to keep detonation down. The one I've chosen for now is from an srt4. I'm hoping it will fit somewhere, but its really wide and I have mocked anything up for it yet.

Pics coming

Progress......

Decided to go top mount. And I arc welded everything w/7018 vs wire feed for longevity.

I'm building one too, but haven't been able to work on it since last fall.

Makes no difference. Welding is welding. You're joining two metals with a filer material. Mig, tig or stick, they're all functionally the same.
Do it the easy way net time

That manifold is a great idea. I'm building a simple log. If I'd known about that, I probably would have done it.

Stick welding will give you the best penetration when welding thick steel but for your project i would go with mig.
good luck

What's your hp or 1/4 mile ET for this project? Being able to do your own fab work is awesome.

I don't have a numerical goal. Just needs to beat my old turbo 8valve.

Welding is only joining metal, but alloys in filler metal are all different between the three and so is arc characteristics and heat transfer. Stick penetrates best and is more tolerable to stress from heat cycles. Tig makes welds look nicest. Wire feed (hardwire or flux core no gas) has nearly no penetration because much of the arc energy is lost in the splatter. But it does get the job done for most, so not knockin it. Just isn't my choice here.

Done quite a bit of drivin around with turbo. Initially in ran up to 6psi when I let off. So I put a spring on the waste gate that brought it to 5psi at full throttle to revv limit. Engine sounded good besides the fact its loud as hell. But it falls on its face after like 1-2psi. I think the computer really disagrees with the excessive boost.

So yesterday I needed to tow my roommate's quad to the races with my car, but I was nervous the extra load and all the girls would be hard on the engine at 5psi. So I just unhooked the waste gate bar from the flapper(always open waste gate). On the drive there I only cruised just coin what I had to to keep up with traffic. No problems. But on the way back at one point I had to grab 3rd and all the throttle she'd give going up a hill to pass a very slow semi with out cutting off the BMW gaining on me. And with out boost, with a trailer uphill it pulled from 60 to 85 faster than it ever had with a trailer on flat ground!

It pulls good all the way to revv limit. I wish I could raise the limit somehow. But anyway thats it for now.

To whom it may concern, Runs great still. Cleaned up the look some. I'll take more pics soon. I raced my roommate (has my old 8v turbo) up to speed limit. They are exactly same at end of first. then 2nd the 16v pulled better on top end and got the edge. But my car is full weight. Hs is down to just a dashboard. My car is more comfortable, but the ole 8v turbo is much more fun for around town with instant spool and that big n flat torque curve.
