I have a 16v 1600 SOHC, I plan on skimming the head thus retarding the timing. I have heard that using the E slot (as opposed to the I slot) on the cam wheel advances the timing, does anyone know by how much?

How much are you machining from the head? Does anybody remember how much it retards the valve timing when resufacing the head?

I followed your advice & searched using different criteria than I had previously. It was stated 1/2 a degree for each 10 thou off the head.
I have not decided on how much to skim, I need to run on pump fuel so CR cannot be too silly, using premium unleaded will help.
My plan is to decide on maximum safe CR (will be between 10 & 10.5:1) & then skim the head to suit this.
