according to hollender interchange book 89-94 3 cyl metros are 4.10 ratio and the xfi is 3.89

what would be the best tranny for 0-60mph 4.39 or 3.89. i don't care for highway speeds i jsut want off the lights acceleration. anyone with good exp or info fill me in cause im gettign confused.

You'll want the 4.39 for quicker acceleration.

OK-after the numbers are all bouncing in my head!-can someone tell me what i need to find to fit my 91 metro 3cyl 5-speed? I want the best gear for gas mileage that will bolt right up? RPO codes i can look at? thanks!

to get best mileage without killing your clutch either put in a XFI tranny or run some 13" tires

well, i was thinking a 3.5 trans with 13" tires. Or, would that just be bad? I'm not worried about take off speed, just low rpm's at highway speeds.

you could barely get car to move with 3.5 and 13" tires. never be able to take off on a hill, if you must kill the power go with xfi tranny and the 13". try the 13" tires first. think you will be supprised how much slower it is to get going

I have to agree, you'll need to be REALLY dedicated to not caring about takeoff with 13's alone... I put em on mine and now my car doesn't really accelerate, it slowly finds its way to 60 mph.

if you truly dont' careabout acceleration, get 13's first, THEN play with gear ratios after a while of driving it like that.

As always, YMMV.

But the 1989-94 SOHC 1.3L Swifts came with the 3.52 final drive and 155/70-13 tires from the factory. :lol:

To do both would be extreme, the XFI came with 3.9 gears and 12" wheels, but it was tuned for low rpm torque. 13" would be a big difference, and 3.5 gears would also. Both together would be dangerous when trying to merge, etc. I've got some stock mk5 wheels I'd let go cheap, they're just not worth shipping. If you can drive down to the PA line near Baltimore, I'm willing to drive up there. They've got factory tires with a little bit of tread left. Starting to get a little slidey in the rain, but enough to be legal.

yes, the 1.3 came with the taller gears and tires but its a 4 cyl and has a lot more torque to get the car moving

Woodie-thanks for the offer, but i actually have a 95 or 96 automatic Metro i'm trying to get rid of and do have another set of wheels. The metro was bought from a friend of my sisters, but he beat up every panel messin around with one of his buddies. I like the older style metros anyway. If someone would want it; i think my uncle wants $650 for it. I think it has like 70,000 miles on it or something. He just put 2 nice fenders and a hood on it. He was gona paint it and drive it, but he says it's too small.
I also found 2 XFi's in the yard-with trannies!! They are the 3.79 ratio 5speed. One still has the head and cam laying there and the engines are in both! Is the cam in the XFi the same specs that Superf1y is grinding to?
Waht about 14" tires? How would i calibrate the speedo btw?

I'm positive the XFI cams are different than anything Suprf1y is grinding. I do remember a post about his economy cams, you might look for it. i thikn it's a review. I think it referred to the xfi cams and the diferrences between it and his econ cams. don't shoot me if i'm wrong though.

They are close enough that I have advised a number of xfi owners to stick with what they have, rather than spend the money on my cam. The results would be indistinguishable.
I will take one if you can get it, though. I would like to do some bench testing.

STuPiDiCuS-dont worry; i would like to think suprf1y is like myself. These forums are not for "flaming" as i see it so-called; they are for information and comradery(<--think thats spelled wrong) and the bringing together of common interests in the name of science--and most importantly---FUN!!!

suprf1y-i was planning on keeping the one cam i found, but if bench testing is your angle; then you will be the first i notify if i find another.

No one knows how to calibrate the speedo?

Hi:
possibly dumb question, I have a choice of a few transmissions to put behind my MarkII T3,none of them that I really know much about the condition of

#1 is T3 transmission
#2 is 1.3SOHC transmission,which fits except for a couple minor bracket issues.

I have put a T3 transmission in a swift 1.3 SOHC and difference was unnoticeable.

What I would like to do is check diff ratios,with the transmission on the ground what do i have to do, to get at the crown & pinion so I can check gear ratios(diff).

I can't say for the T3, since those were never marketed down here, but based on dealership brochures the tranny ratios for the gears in the 1.0, 3 cyl and 1.3, 4 cyl SOHC cars are identical - the only difference being the final drive

Jewar, the turbo 3 tranny has 4.10 ratio, while the 1.3L SOHC one SHOULD have 3.79 or whatever it is. Also, the turbo tranny has a stronger diff IIRC (I'm not to up and up on the 4 cylinder cars). Are you planning on putting more power than a little over stock output through the tranny? If so, stick with the turbo tranny IMO.
