On a similar topic of gears and tires....

I've got a 1993 3 door 1L swift 3 cyl, with 5 speed manual and 12" rims. Stock size I think was 145-12, and I've got a set of Michelin 155/80-12 on there now. Sadly, they don't make that tire any more. All I can find in the same size is the Kumho Power Star 758, and the Marshall version which I think is the same tire at Walmart. Anyone have experience with that tire, or know of another tire? Also, with the 1.0 and 5 speed, what final drive ratio do I have? I don't have a tach, and I did a simple excel spreadsheet and it showed I was doing 3500 RPM at 100 km/h, with the 4.39 ratio. I've used this calculation to determine my normal shift point speeds of around 3000 - 3500 RPM (20, 35, 50, 70, 85), but if I'm wrong with the final drive ratio, then I'm way off, but the engine sounds about right for these numbers to make sense... thanks for any info on either topic

Gotta kinda disagree.

My hatch (93 standard metro manual) Originally 12" has 4.11's, The vert (also 93 but auto) has factory 13" tires 3.87's by vin/rpo. Plan is to ditch the auto and put in a 4.11 manual if not 4.39 Any stampings or easy way to ID the 4.39 if it was on a shelf as opposed to in the car?? Reason I ask is local wrecker has all the metro trannys pulled and its too darn cold to figure out gear ratios in his shed.....

don't know what to tell you except that the 4.39:1 ratio was only put in the verts.

The 95+ 3 cyl 3-door hatchbacks got the 4.39. I know because I've pulled two 4.39 gearsets from junkyard 95+'s.

What are the tranny ratios (not ring and pinion ratios) for the non GTi trannys?

I see that the GTi is:

1st:---3.416
2nd:--1.894
3rd:--1.280 or 1.375
4th:--0.914 or 1.03
5th:--0.757 or .87

And which GTis used the different 3rd, 4th and 5th gears?

Thanks

Edit: I see from manually looking thru old posts that the second numbers for 3rd, 4thh and 5th are the non GTi. The search function didn't work.

Can just 3rd gear or 4th gear or just 5th gear be changed without changing the other ratios?

Thanks,

The ratio you show now its the same as GTI North america
3-1.280
4-0.914
5-0.757
Final 4.10
All 1-2 its the same in the world for 1.3
