what trannys will work in my 89 swift gti. I'm thinking of going to the junk yard and pulling a tranny out of a geo until I can rebuild mine. Is this a bad Idea?

When you say going out, is it noisy? Or jumping out of gear? Or hard to shift into gears?

Pulling from a geo isn't a bad idea. Anything from 89-01 will work. If you want exactly the same ratios, choose a 89-94 transmission from behind a 3cyl(4:10 final drive), if you want a bit of extra pickup, grab a 95-01 3cyl transmission(4.39 final drive), all convertibles share this final drive, if you happen to come across one. 4cyl models will all have lower (numerically) ratios, so you will lose some pickup and have a lower highway cruise rpm. Used trannies are a bit of a gamble on these cars, but there are good ones to be had still. If it shifts into second from third, you're golden! That's the weak point, and it's basically gotta go in to know if it's good. With a spare, even if the spare isn't the best, you will have time to get your gt trans repaired properly, rebuilt, whatever you choose.
