Well my GF's car decided to kick second gear out of her tranny about an hour ago. It's her birthday today too, isn't that nice!

The car is a 94 Swift 1.3 SOHC. I have a spare auto trans out of a 91 Sprint 1.0.

Will the 1.0 auto bolt up to the 1.3 motor? I tried a search and the results are either about swapping motors or auto/manual conversions.

I know the 5-speeds are interchangable, but are the autos between the 3 and 4 cylinders....for some reason I believe there is a difference between the 2. I may be wrong. The faster I get her car going the better, I just don't want to go through all the work as a guess.

Thanks in advance.

lol.

I'll tell her that. It actually went on the way to her birthday dinner. I had to limp it home down the highway.

If the 1.0 trans won't work, I need to source one quick from a local wrecker as we live in the country and commute to the city for work.

Put the 1.0 tranny in. Likely there's no huge difference. If she blows it up, then I guess you'll need to source yet another. Dunno how common the autos were for the GTi though.

Tell her to take it easy and make sure you check the fluid more often. ;)

Well I got another tranny today.

When I called the wrecker, they told me it was off a 4-cylinder. I get there, they are all drunk, not sure where it is....I had to find it. Once I did, they weren't sure if it was off a 3 or 4 cylinder.

Next question.....The codes stamped on the top of the aluminum housing...does anyone have a link to find out what the codes mean or can someone tell me what I got?

I can post the numbers later this evening if need be, gotta run back into the city.

Same transmission for both engines. Transmission is made by Aisin Seikki and is known as the MX17 - GM has its own code for it which is the M60. Aisin I believe has now merged with Borg Warner and is known as Aisin Warner. As for the code - thie first should be a letter denoting the year of manufacture (Y is 2000 - based on my own car - I guess X will 99 etc). The rest are just the serial no of the transmission.

Thanks for the response. I was hoping you would put your "2 cents" in here as from what I understand you are very knowledgable about transmissions in general.

Well I guess we have 2 automatics now. Have a back-up for the back-up lol.
