But you know some good suppliers for close ratio gearboxes?

These are 20+ year old cars, your choices are limited  The bacci one I gave you the link to is very good, the suzuki rd ones are well made but dealing with the company that actually makes it is a nightmare apparently, you need to phone them, they don't answer emails, if you want to pay the suzukird premium then go for it.

There a few companies that will make them on request, usually takes at least 6 weeks, try looking for the 'Gripper' one, there have been a few group buys over the years including a Canadian rally guy that got a whole bunch of dog engagement gearsets made last year.

I have had several sets of tall 1st and 2nd gears made to push 1st and 2nd upto 3rd gear and then use a lower diff to bring the overall speeds down, works very well but is quite specific in it's application, ie non turbo, circuit or autocross on small diameter wheels.

What year is your car, I seem to remember someone from Malta with a mk1 :?

If you want off the shelf then buy a honda =)

Yes I think I am the one from Malta :)

Mine is a 91 and mainly I use it for hillclimbs. Will check those sites and in the mean time if you find something else let me know.

No mate ...Honda No!!

Cheers and Thanks
Rub.

I checked the srd website and the prices have been updated, massively, US$3k which is really good, they used to be listed at 5k, there's not many places that will have one in stock, usually a 6-8 wait for it to be made.
For me to get a new first and 2nd gears made would be around US$1500 and you need a lower ratio final drive, that would give you nice close 1st to 2nd to 3rd gearchange, standard gti change to 4th and then 5th.

What tyres are you running?

You mean 048's... that size is pretty much equivalent to 195/50/15.

Here's how a taller 1st and 2nd changes things, notice much higher speeds in 1st and 2nd but the rpm drop has been reduced, 3rd, 4th and 5th are the same gears and therefore the rpm drop into 4th and 5th is still the same but the lower ratio diff lowers the speeds in those gears which improves acceleration, the gears I got made only suit people who use 1st 2nd and 3rd gear alot like autocross and hillclimbs.

Here is another one, say for example you already had a 4.7 diff, add taller 1st and 2nd gears and compared it with the FIA superclose ratio gearset, 3.083, 2.267, 1.778, 1.381, 1.167 I've had to use the 3.79 diff as the 4.1 is just not fast enough on my track, 5th gear is half way between 3rd and 4th in a standard gearbox.
