The 5 speed transmission in my '93 GT is finally worn out. Will a 5 speed from a '92 Samurai work? The Samurai transmission has under 60k on it and he wants $250.

How about a '99 Geo Tracker 5 speed? I know they were made by a different company by '99, but is it the same design? There's one in CL that's closer to me than the Samurai.

Thanks.

Ok, I'll bite.

Samurai is RWD, as is the Sidekick/Tracker. Swift is FWD, totally different transmissions.

The only other transmission that will bolt in to your GT is a Geo Metro tranny, but the only one that should be in there is another GT trans. (the Geo trans is weaker)

There are good tutorials on here for going through a GT 5 speed... you may want to consider that. Once you open the case up many times the damage isn't as bad as you would think. What is the problem with your current trans?

Thanks, last night I didn't consider the rwd part of the problem. The car didn't have a 5th gear when I bought it and now the 4th is popping out. I've rebuilt a manual before for a Ford, but since then I've had a motorcycle crash and two car accidents. My shoulder is pretty much crippled for anything thing like this now. I'll just hire a trans shop and have them check it out for me.

Thanks for pointing out the issue to me. The car is a beater, but when we were considering buying another car I had to weigh what I really want to do with the car. I've decided to keep it and just start fixing it up. The transmission is the biggest problem on the car, after that it should be easy. At least easier than pulling the transmission out.

Thanks again.
