I am swapping the automatic out for a 5 speed on my 97 geo 1.3L.
What transmission can I use?
I was thinking a 1.0L trans should work fine?
I would like something in the 3.5 to 3.9 range for final ring and pinion.
Can I go back as far as 1990?
Are the earlier axles splines the same?
I have a set of axles out of a 98 1.0L 5 speed car and all the supporting items. (shifter, clutch cable, axles, flywheel, clutch peddle/ brake peddle mounting bracket)
I can find 94 and earlier for about $175. For 95 and later they want close to $500.

Good, fast, cheap. You only get two.

95+ 4 cyl will give you a 3.79:1

dont get a 3 cyl if you want the ratio range youre looking for. 89-94 1.3 (4 door only? not positive on this) will get you a 3.52:1

oh...and youll have to use 95+ 1.3 axles. the 1.0 axles are incorrect length for use with the 1.3 engine. 89-94 axles are about an inch shorter than 95+

I have a set of 98 1.0L, 5 speed axles. I got them for just the inner CV joints. I will be using my 97 1.3L axles and just change the inner CV joints over to them. The splines and the seals are different between the automatics and the standard transmissions.
Is the GT manual transmissions splined differently then the standard Geo transmissions? I have a line on a 94 1.3L GT trans.

The gt trans is 4.1 ratio, and has the same splines. I don't think you will be able to mix and match inner cv joints to make axle work. I'm certain the length is different. All 1.3 manual cars use a short auxiliary jack shaft on the passenger side, in order to have drive axles close to the same length to prevent torque steer.
