Hi teamswift,
I was offered a SLD for sale this morning.... but I'm totally new to transmissions so I don't know how it should look like. For the pictures I have seen of the standard GTI Diff this "LSD" looks pretty much like one, but I couldn't take any pictures at that moment. The guy showed it to me and the wide pin that goes across the whole thing was broken so I'll have to get one made. So anyway, could anyone post a pic of a LSD so I can compare that to a standard Diff?.... so I know I'm not getting ripped off?

Thank you in advance

OK maybe you guys think i didn't do my research... well I did. As far as I know there are three types of SLD's:
No.1 helical

image_id: 22260

No.2 plate/disc style

image_id: 22259

No.3 phantom grip

image_id: 22258

But the one that was shown to be, was kind of like a stock open diff... just like on this picture, but than with that pin broken in two.

image_id: 22261

It's actually the same guy that sold me the car in the first place, but hes totally not a mechanic. So should I conclude that he showed me the wrong part or that the diff was "converted" to phantom style and than the plates got out of the diff when the pin broke?
Or is there a LSD that's similar to a stock Diff?

The only one missing is the 'viscous' type lsd, they are sealed up, quite common as oem diffs, don't buy a 2nd hand one...

Do you a pic of that one? I found a post abut that type.... viewtopic.php?f=15&t=52838#p395163 but there's no good picture of it.
Why not getting it second hand? Isn't there a way to know if it's good or bad?

Thank you

When I said 'quite common as oem diffs' I was refering to cars in general, a lot of nissans and subaru's, mx5's have viscous lsds, Cusco made a viscous one for the gti, as they get older the viscous fluid wears out and is less able to control slip, no easy way to replace the fluid.

I went back to the guy and couldn't notice anything "special" on the diff, it looked like a standard GTI diff. He swears it is a LSD so maybe it had a phantom grip conversion or something similar, just like this one http://www.phantomgrip.com/order?page=s ... gory_id=39 that just broke in pieces when the spider gear centering shaft failed.

Humor in the obvious: Why don't you post a pic of the actual diff in question? That way we can see what the "diff" is between the one in question and other known units.

Thanks, Shimaze

CAUTION: It sounds like the seller is on LSD? Or maybe his is trying to sell the diff for some LSD?

I would have to drive to his house again for the pictures :P I'm pretty sure now that it's a stock Diff though, but he doesn't know anything about cars, he only drives them; that guy has owned 16 GTIs already
He wasn't on LSD though, but certainly on weed.... he's always asking me for my empty cigarette-packs to make his "tips" haha.
I should have some pics in the next couple of weeks, as I always need something for the swift and this guy has like a whole swift-yunkyard in his house.

Wow has it been 6 months already?! I guess I've been too busy. Anyway I went to see the guy today and took a picture of the diff in question. I don't know why he keeps saying it's an LSD, it looks like a standard diff to me. Can you guys confirm?
