I have two trannies with 3.57 or 3.79 gear sets that I can choose from, to swap into my 97 geo metro with a 1.3L 4 cylinder engine.
Which one should I use?

Good, fast, cheap. You only get two.

3.79 for short trips, 3,56 if you're going to use it as a long haul driver.
Maximum speed limit in Texas is 75 mph, so I'd seriously consider the higher gears unless you do a lot of stop and go.
If you are into high revs, then consider the lower gearset.
I believe that engine has a reputation for having a decent amount of torque.

Which do you want to use?

I have the 3.79 gear set in the car now and mileage is 37+ around town with A/C on. Highway is over 42 mpg.
65 mph tach runs at 3,000 rpm with the 3.79 gear set. With the 3.52 gears what will it drop down too?

Well here is a picture of the finished transmission with the 3.52 ring and pinion.
Thank god I have extra parts for these.
I had to replace the following parts.
Rebuild kit that included bearings, seals and syncro's.
Input shaft, 1st gear, 2nd gear, syncros and slider for 1st and 2nd,
all 3 shift forks, and cases.
Picture 2462 completed transmission.

Picture 2431 eveyrthing in this box had something wrong with it and had to be replaced.

The broken split pin is what came out of the differential that holds the spider pin in place.
Front input shaft bearing has a cracked inner race and no ball cage left.
Input shaft is out of round from the front bearing spinning on the shaft, 2nd gear(part of shaft) has fatigue marks and will not survive
another build. All of the gears had rolled over engagement teeth along with the sliders engagement teeth being rolled.
Shift forks had up to 0.150" wear(5th gear) and are beyond repair.
