i was driving back from the city about 2 weeks ago and i stopped at a stop sign going onto a busy highway and when i went to go forward i didn't move at all so i turned down my cd player and listened every time i put it in reverse or drive i heard a loud grinding noise, any clue what i would look for inside when i drop the transmission out? pictures would be helpful too since i have no clue what too look at besides thinking it would be a input shaft or something

Sure it's not a cv axle problem? Everytime I go to look at a civic that needs a transmission I find one cv shaft spinning in the outer joint. Much less hassle than a trans issue!
Easy test, put park brake on, put car in gear and hop out. Look at cv axles, make sure nothing is spinning. Ideally need to see inner joint as well. These auto trannies are generally pretty tough overall, so failure isn't to common. If you do have an internal problem, it's likely the diff pin or the like from spinning one tire like crazy from being stuck at some point. If it's inside the trans, the specific issue really doesn't matter, repair would be to install a used trans anyways. Repair or rebuilt will just land up costing to much.
One last thought, make sure flywheel/torque convertor bolts are ok as well. Small cover is easy to pull underneath to inspect that area. Good luck!

You replace the transmission. By the time you pull trans, disassemble, make a parts list, locate parts(or most likely disassemble a used donor trans), you would be further ahead to just install a used trans.
To answer your specific question, you need to pull transmission and disassemble it to see the diff.

You can see the diff pin if you pull an axle. I had one go on my 91 auto. Just replaced the Trans. But in my case the diff pin went through my case and was spewing oil everywhere. But at least it made it home.

Don't matter. But that side is the closest to the body.

Did you read my previous post? Regardless of what's happened, the transmission needs to be removed. I'd spend your time pulling it rather than fretting over trying to see anything while it's in there. Don't mean to be rude, but why not focus on repairing the car so you can drive it again? When you have a used trans back in the car, split this trans and see what happened.

Thats the pin. From what I can see in the pic it looks ok. If you can see if there is any movement. It should not move up/down or be able to be turned.

The one good thing is. If you do have to drop the trans the case splits really easy. And remember. Replace the output seals.

Also forgot to say. When I first got my car it made a really bad knock that the old owner thought was engine. It turned out to be the 6 bolts that connect the flex plate to the torque converter came out. I was driving it home heard one last bang and had nothing. Pulled the black inspection cover off the bottom that I noticed was dented to shit amd seen all the missing bolts. A parts store was half a boock away so I got 6 regular bolts put them in and drive for another year and a half before my diff pin went. So also check that.
