i just can't keep my hands off some of my engine parts. =)

i have been whittling on g13 flywheels for several years but i just ran my third run and probably final single machine lightened flywheel as well as the next phase machine skeletonized flywheel. the purpose of that experiment was to see just how much i could lighten a factory flywheel without compromising its strength.

this is what i do to lighten a g13 flywheel with material removed from it's perimeter.

the step beyond was to completely remove the material at the perimeter which created windows. removal of that much material required that the starter ring gear was tig welded into place on the back side.

as always, when you machine a flywheel it breaks the crystallization of the cast steel so it is imperative that you have the friction face surface ground just as you would when having the flywheel serviced prior to installing new clutch components.

now presenting Richards near zero mass low inertia flywheels...... :-P you may need a 8600 redline to launch...... :twisted:

that engine will spin up quicker than a 7 year old with a case of red bull!

Good to see someone finally going the whole hog, they are looking pretty similar to the billet ones that dmwDave has been selling for years.

3.05kgs/6.7lbs... my flywheel is light but the clutch cover is heavy, I'd like to go to a twin plate clutch but that would mean getting yet another flywheel :|

gee whiz! my flywheel does look a lot like that pretty billet one. :wink:

i have been sneaking up on this skeletonized design for a few years and it seemed a pretty normal progression from the lightened flywheels i have turned out in the past.

and you know, the proof is in the pudding. the improved throttle response is well worth the effort and taking the material from the perimeter reduces the rotating mass where it counts the most.

Taking material from the periphery is the only safe place to take it from, there is a local machine shop here that does a lot of 4age and honda flywheels exactly as you have done yours and I have't heard of any failures, if Dave wasn't selling his billet ones I would of got my stock one skeletonized years ago as it's one of the best bang for buck improvements you can do.

All I can say... wow.. great job... I am planning to light the flywheel as well.

How extremely carefully is it machining that flywheel without break it? Install and test it?

Richard can we still get this done through you? I have been considering a aluminum fly wheel , but i am indecisive. :huh:

That's cool! Pretty close to the weight of an aluminum. I just put aluminum on my t3. 12 lb to 6 lb on the flywheel. The new act clutch and pressure plate were 1 lb more than stock because of the copper in the clutch pad. Big difference in feel especially when zipping through 1st and second. Much more fun to drive.
