I am also getting better than 50 MPG on my Metro and I just learned that this car loves to be opened up on the highway without hurting my fuel economy. It actually went up!

My first tank I averaged 44mpg. Had the SES light for the EGR (modulator was plumbed backwards!) the whole time. I also was driving 65 mph alot on the highway when possible. I'm gonna try another tank of driving easy 55mph on the highway and see if it continues to go up. next tankl I'm gonna try 89 octane and see what improvements I see. Then I'll start driving faster on the highway and see what results occur. It is nice to go well over 400 miles on a tank though :D

My average speed was 65 mph when I got the 54.5 mpg on a trip to my parents house that was 1000 miles away. My top speed according to the gps unit was 81 mph, but I didn't maintain that speed. I must have been passing someone.

Hi all,

The car is a 1992 Metro XFI.

My goal is 60/60 (60 mpg US at 60 mph)

Car has 14" rims with 45 psi tire pressure. Apart from that it is currently stock.

Not sure I'll keep the 14" rims because of the width of tread

I did a baseline run of 115 miles duration. The car returned 54.9 mpg (US Gallon)

Finally in the 50 club with a 51.05!! 100% city driving, some aero mods, EOC switch. Just happy for 51 now going for 55 then 60. Small steps.

Would like to see that. Our cars turn so many rpm's at 80 I don't think it is possible to get 45-50mpg at that speed.

I filled up my Chevy Sprint after I got home from the West Coast Meet @ South Center Levitz on 7-19-08...
Since then I had driven 53 miles around Everett, WA, a trip to Bonny Lake WA [152 miles round trip], over to Lake Stevens to pick up a used engine and many parts [about 300 pounds of stuff] 26 miles round trip.

A Total of 231 miles and the car took 4.8 gallons of gas... 48 miles per gallon ...

The car was so out of the center of gravity, the Front Wheels spun when taking off from a stop light ....[I know, very dangerous] ....... We moved the Engine forward about 2 feet and it was better....

I know this mileage was not 50+++, but I think it was incredible to get this mileage with the variety of trips and weight in the car .......................

The Engine was given to me for FREE .... It came out of a 1985 Chevy Sprint [MK1] G10 .............

I am still waiting for the Title for the 1988 Chevy Sprint which will cost me $100, which will only need some engine work ....... [rebuild] ...................... too bad it is not a Turbo ....

See for yourself, I always drive like that on the highway (if possible with traffic) lowest I have driven is about 38-40 MPG, but that was with insane driving with continious sprinting and drifting.

All I saw was you driving about 80 but not the 50MPG part. I could post a video of me doing 80 too.

I have repowered my 95 sedan with a g10, fuel mileage is 50.1 last 1500 miles. The 4 cylinder 5-speed will be installed in the next 2 weeks. I will check the fuel mileage and report. finally an xfi cam. Coming soon.

Wooohooo!! My best mileage to date! I got 65.6 MPG US on the first (flat) half of my trip. The second half was mountainous, and I 'only' got 48.8 MPG but still, I'm very happy!
87 Sprint, 1L, 5 speed, 15" wheels, 155/60/15 tires.

Hi everyone , im currently getting around 62 Miles per imperial gallon and I have got as good as 68 . what's that 55 MPG in US gallons ?
Im running a more or less stock 1985 sprint , the only original parts gone is most of the pollution control stuff , and the automatic choke .
I never guessed these cars were as good as they are .
I have had mine for 5 years and have used it like a truck and have never had any major problems with it , and have been driving it for about 26,000 miles .
Just a all round fun car , great off road , and in the snow . :mrgreen:

Wow I really can't believe that more people aren't trying to get the 50 mpg from their cars? Is everyone here just going for more power instead of fuel economy?

The day I bought my 96 geo 3 banger with 5 speed I drove it from Columbus OH to Kokomo IN and got 46 mpg...it shook terribly at idle and I thought it was a broken motor mount. They were okay. I changed the cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs....when I grabbed the wires they basically turned into powder in my hands! After that it got 49 mpg (same as EPA rating) and after removal of 140 lbs, including more modern tires that would take a max of 44 psi of pressure compared to the 36 psi ones that were on it the mileage jumped up over 50 mpg! Using homemade headlight covers and a grill (bumper) block I now get 52-58 normally at 55-65 mph. I have gotten 4 tanks at 60 mpg when driving at only 50-55 mph!

I use this car as a delivery truck. On a very consistant basis every 100 lbs extra wt is 1 mpg worse FE and 200 lbs is 2 mpg worse! Even 10 lbs can equal a drop of a tenth of a mpg!

All through the Cascade Mountains, 300 lb load, 440 miles...I averaged 47.6 mpg and drove 65+ when I could. 1994 3 cyl. 5 spd. coupe. Careful driving yields 53 mpg.

My 1989 4 door 3cyl. 5 spd. gets 54.6 mpg in normal driving. At 190,000 miles it sure makes a lot of grinding and whirring noises.

This contemporary alcohol laced gas reduces mileage quite a bit. I am sure 58 mpg. is attainable in normal driving with 100% regular gas only.

I find 3rd gear is the ONLY gear to use when passing and that you shouldn't pass at 60 mph or better unless you have a longggg, empty road ahead. 4th gear is quite a reduction from 3rd and holds little passing power. There is a limit you know?

When driving normally I shift at 10, 20, 30, 45mpg into 5th gear...best mileage.
When in a hurry I shift 15, 30, 45, 60mpg

60 mph average yields best mileage.

Tight tires @ 35 lbs.+, downshift when speed falls off, steady pedal when climbing, neutral coasting to a stop, 3rd gear ALWAYS in city traffic including making fast turns, (just stay in 3rd and feather the gas pedal)...it WILL recover comfortably.

Front window roll-ups are a bummer...everything else works great. I did add driving lights and it made a teriffic difference at night. I pointed the 1994 coupe's driving lights just ahead of the car. The 1989 4 door just hasn't good lights so I pointed the new driving lights further out and switched the stock lights to Halogen bulbs...MUCH MUCH better now.

I am tremendously pleased by these two cars. Our 1994, 4 cylinder, automatic Chrysler Sebring Convertible gets a steady 28 mpg and our 4 cyl. 2003 Ford Focus gets LESS. We seldom drive our 318 cubic inch Dodge Van & Pickup now. The Focus will be sold while still pristine.

Tires for Geo Metros are now VERY expensive...this is a bummer...very few people carry them anymore but I figure things will change with all the small cars re-emerging on the markets now that gas is always over $4.00/gallon.

last year on my way to the North West TeamSwift meet i was crusin between 70mph-80mph, when me and my copilot were up there we got lost trying to find a bowling ally and bouncing off the rev limitor most of the day. 70-80 all the way back, and got almost 42mpg. i was in shock, if i was nicer to the trottle i would of got 50 for sure.

When I first bought my 94 metro a few years ago, it had 136k miles and had
just had the head rebuilt due to a blown head gasket.
I put 13" rims on the front and a used set of tall snow tires inflated to
42lbs. I had about 5000miles of 52 to 57mpg. even at highway speeds
above 75, but then had a rapid decline to 42 to 45mpg.
A mechanic friend who is a "suzuki guru" told me that when you only rebuild the head on an older engine, the resulting increase in pressure will wipe out your old rings in about 5000 miles.
This explains the loss of mileage, and I also bought a JDM engine to replace the original with.
I plan on rebuilding the original and will definitely try "Singh Grooves" as well as the adjustable timing gear.
I recently figured out a simple way to install an air dam and block the bumper holes in one operation. I am not sure if the slot under the hood will provide enough air for Az. summer driving, but I can open up a vent hole easily enough if it is needed. The air dam is a sheet of coroplast installed with self tapping screws. I made a backup support with 1-1/8" pallet strap and also used the same material to make corner supports that attach to the inside of the wheel well to support the lower edges near the wheel.
I will probably need to trim the air dam a bit and it made need more rear support to keep it from folding under at higher speeds, but it only took about an hour to make and install.
Now I need to find some shallow dome hub caps that cover the whole wheel.......
I have also changed the suspension over to the stiffer 96 with a swift gt sway bar.
The front springs have had one coil cut, but I still need to trip the rear springs.

i ran that type of hubcap on a car in the 80s and having to pull the hubcap off to air the tires really got to be a pita. :blackeye:

Cost $3.639 @ gallon and took 5.882 gallons (U.S., not Imperial) for a total of $21.40.
Mileage on trip odometer: 294.1
Mileage: exactly 50 miles per gallon.
Why?
Probably the 2 hour trips into Los Angeles and traffic keeping me below or at 65 miles per hour. (boring)
Also, didn't run the A/C.
Was I trying to get 50 mpg? No.
Modifications?
Mud flaps (ha!...it NEVER rains out here)
New CARB compliant catalytic converter (I figured it was about due)
Oil: Mobil One 0W-40 (yep, you read it right).
Filter: Mobil One
Tires: due for a new set-sun burns out the sidewalls even though the tread is OK (prices are outta site, man)
Air Filter: pretty decent knock off brand
Final Drive: 3.79

Last time it got 50+ miles per gallon?
2002 in the Deep South on a Cross Country vacation.

what am I missing?
I have rebuilt the 89 lsi completely. bored out the cylinders .0020 and got the econo cam and gear thru 3tech. ... I avergage around 90 miles per day and almost all freeway (65-70mph). I keep pretty steady on the gas peddle and kick the car into neutral and coast when I see a red light ahead or about every traffic slowing area... yet I still only get around 44 mpg? I dont keep anything heavy in the car and don't hot-rod it off the line. It runs great now but I would think I should be well into the 50 club?

Back about 8 years ago, I had the same body style metro and used it in a paper route that would fully squat the rear end at the beggining of the route every night. That car was abused and driven rough every day and only had a top end rebuild to it and it got 58 mpg consistantly! nearly no freeway miles.

I had to sell it back then and dont recall it being a xfi.

right..... so, Any ideas on either why I got nearly 60mpgs on my last geo or why I only get 45 average mpg in this one?
