Here's the final plan on the hoods.

They'll be approx 4-5lbs
fiberglass framing and base
infused carbon on fiberglass for stiffness, done in an autoclave (Aerospace quality)
Price - $500-$700 (won't be sure of exact price until the original is done). It may be as high as $800 if modeling and mold costs get too high.

I'll need about 15 hoods to break even on these. So everyone please let me know asap if you're in. I'll need $200-$300 deposit from everyone to get things rolling. They'll be ready within a month or 2.

Deposits will have to be check or money order. If you want to use paypal, I'll have to add 3% to cover the paypal charges. PM me if you want to put down a deposit. So far, I have one definate

Any questions are to be directed to the other thread. This is for interested people ONLY. Other posts will be deleted

Sorry about the crappy pic, but here's a concept pic of my car with the hood on it.

I'm just curious here. how many interested parties in these hoods are going for the "look" of carbon fiber vs the weight savings? If you could get something cheaper but weighed more would you be interested?

Honestly, the cost is in the tooling. If I had 20+ hoods, they'd only be $400. The carbon per hood only costs about $100-$150, if even that much. There's 2 tools that have to be made. The framing for the hood, and the hood skin. The tooling for these will be well over $2000+. The materials isn't the problem. It's the volume to pay for the tooling. If I had the money, I'd pay for the tool myself, and sell them on ebay, but I don't have that kinda money lying around right now :(.

I'm considering this right now. I'd only be interested in a stock replacement MK2/3 hood, no bulges, no scoops, no vents, no eyebrows, no washer jet holes. I'd also give consideration to just purchasing the outer skin, and attaching it with DZUS clips to save the weight of the inner skin. Even though, I have no issue paying for a hood, it's still a very expensive way to knock a couple pounds off the car (somewhere I have the figure of what a stock hood weighs).

Are these hoods going to be clearcoated in some way to protect the resin from UV damage?

Yep, they will be cleared. The browed hood is already being made for my one-off mold right now. Just a skin would be one hell of a project to ship. It would be VERY fragile.

Well, everyone should start saving up. Don't consider this thread dead :D I'll be ready to do this when everyone else has the money for their hoods.

Is this for the metro or the swift?

If it's for the metro, I'm in. I have the money now.

It is now Suzuki Swift mythology about the illusive carbon fibre bonnets!
