i only developed a cam angle sensor for my modified turbo3 engines. several tricks i used were embedding a small cylindrical magnet into an indexed tooth of an aftermarket aluminum adjustable cam gear that could be read by a positional hall effect sensor.

that works if you are building an engine management controller but it would be impractical for the engines you are talking about. they have distributors that both read the cam angle to fire the coil and direct the high frequency spark to the correct plug.

I think that would work for my application, the mounting bracket would be a little tricky. Did you drill a hole in the rear timing cover?. I have ms3 that I put together for this project.

on the g10t there is a flange on the front of the valve cover that allowed me to drill a hole to mount the hall effect device right behind the cam gear. i positioned the hed so that the magnet embedded into the cam gear's outer radius would pass directly through the center of the sensor to trigger the zero point of the cam phase.

the crank trigger wheel then counts in increments of 10 degrees while the cam trigger indicates phase angle to ensure the crank reports tdc for cylinder #1 to put the injection events into the correct phase.

you only need a cam angle sensor to run in sequential injection mode.
