i seem to be losing coolant. not quickly, no puddles (so the radiator seems OK) and no white smoke from the back (which is good).

what can i do to try to figure out where the problem is?

Check for old cracked hoses, and take a look at your heater core for leaks too.

if the heater core has pinholes, it can blow in a fine aerosol of air/antifreeze into the interior when you have the defogger fan switched on. antifreeze can have a distinctive smell, and can leave a sticky residue on your windows, and make it seem like your defogger is working in reverse. ie. fogging your windsheild.

also check your rad cap seal

Mine was doing this too. Front of radiator fins were slightly green - think I had the tiniest pinhole. Replaced radiator - still lost coolant over time.

Eventually the waterpump started leaking badly, especially when cooled down (pressure actually helps it's seal work better). After replacing the water pump I no longer have an unexplained coolant loss.
