how would i go about diagnosing this and how bad or serious of a problem is this?

The electrical problem is a short in the wiring of the fuel injection.
A fuse blows leaving you unable to start the car-- till you put another fuse in

Do you mean a fuel pump fuse?
Look at a dealer manual for a diagram and trace and check for grounding faults.

Are you talking about the 15a FI fuse under the hood? I had that same problem a while back. It was a short in the harness where it went through the firewall. From years of moving back and forth, some of the wires in that harness wear their insulation off. The problem was fixed in the 95+ cars with a brace on the brake booster that held the harness in place, so it didn't move. I took my harness apart, cut the bare wires out, spliced them back together with a crimping terminal, and put a heat-shrink wrap over them. Then re-taped the whole harness back together.

idles fine
runs fine
starts so so (this is when you most likely blow the fuse)
it can blow the fuse while driving

not nessesarily at high speeds, but it is possible it goes dead in terms of no fuel no stutter no smoke no warning at all check engine doesn't show anything either it's a risky drive I haven't had it drive for 1/2 a day without it blowing the fuse since I've had it for over a year so I really haven't gotten around in this car at all Sometimes you can throw in a new fuse and it'll fire up, but not if it's all hot--you have to wait till morning or however long it takes for the engine to cool I'm sure you could drive it to Canada if you bought a couple packs of
fuses and had all your tools several days of free time and be prepaired for roadside stop
and go type thing till you get home...
